Spring Running Club
Updates:
PRACTICES:
- Will begin Monday, February 26th and end on Wednesday, May15th
- Mondays after school at Lowe from 2:30-3:30 (This practice will focus on general running)
- We will pick up your runner from their classrooms at dismissal. This is why we need so many volunteers for Monday practices. If we do not have at least 5 volunteers to help with dismissal signed up the Friday before then we cannot have practice on the following Monday.
- Kindergarten runners must have a parent present at practice.
- We will sign your runner in for each practice. It will be your responsibility to sign your runner out of practice. We will have the sign-in/sign-out sheet behind the school at practice.
- Please park and walk to the back to sign your runner out of practice.
- If your runner attends C.E.P. we will take them there at the end of practice.
- Wednesdays at Tom Sawyer Park from 5:30-6:30 (This practice will focus on Cross Country style distance running)
- Our main meeting area at Tom Sawyer is the pavilion at the main entrance, to the right of the rec center and pool.
- On occasion we will meet on the backside of the park by the soccer fields. We will notify you in advance if we move practice to the backside.
- If you can volunteer we love having parent runners working with their child as well as non runners providing extra representation along the running route to keep an eye on the runners. This helps make sure all runners stay on the course and they love having cheering and support as they work.
- Kindergarten runners must have a parent participate with their runner at the park practice. This is for the safety of your young runner. Our practices on this day will be spread out over distance and we must make sure we have an adult with our youngest runners.
- There will be no sign-in/sign-out sheet for this practice.
- Saturdays at Eastern High School's track from 11:am to 12:00-12:30pm (we have the track scheduled till 12:30 but should have most practices done by 12) This practice will focus on the various track and field events.
- Our first couple of practices we will have all of our athletes try each event. Then we will begin the process of specializing them into specific events that they enjoy or that we think they will perform best in. The track and field running allows all of our young runners to find their running niche. Everything from short sprints to middle distance, to mile runs, field events to include jumping and throwing events, and relays. Track and field covers it all.
- Kindergarten runners must have a parent present at practice.
- There will be no sign-in/sign-out sheet for this practice.
- PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR RUNNER HAS A WATER BOTTLE AT ALL PRACTICES!!!
- Practice Attire:
- Please send your runner to school in the clothes they will practice in.
- Shorts or light weight leggings/running sweats
- a t-shirt and light weight long sleeve shirt, and a light coat. Think Layers
- Proper running shoes. These don't need to be expensive. There are many great budget options that will work for your runner. If you need help selecting a proper shoe several local companies will fit your runner for the best possible shoe. Fleet Feet, Ken Combs, and Swags are all great for this.
- Don't wear:
- Jeans or heavy pants
- Bulky coats, again think layers.
- Basketball shoes
- Please send your runner to school in the clothes they will practice in.
- Cancelation of practices:
- We will do our best to monitor the weather and make the best decision in regards to cancellations.
- Practices will be cancelled for the following reasons:
- Temperatures below 40 degrees
- Heat index above 100
- Heavy or persistent rain
- Severe weather to include thunderstorms or excessive wind
- If a cancelation happens on a Monday the decision will be made by noon and your child will be dismissed home in their normal manner.
- We try our best to make the right call, but sometimes mother nature doesn't play along. There are times we will cancel based on a forecast and the Kentucky weather does something completely different. I apologize in advance for those, as we will have at least one cancelation based on forecast and the weather ends up being perfect for running.
- Notifications for cancelation of practice will go out through email, Facebook, and GroupMe.
RACES:
- Registration for races
- If you want your child registered for a race, you MUST complete the registration on the Lowe Running Weebly page. If you do not complete this registration, your runner will NOT be registered for the meet.
- I will have a link for each specific race posted. It's as simple as clicking the link and letting me know yes or no if your runner will participate in that race.
- If your participation changes fill out the link again. I will take the most recent submission as to your runners availability.
- Each race usually has a deadline 1 to 1-1/2 weeks before the race date but I will close the race registration process a couple of days before the actual meet deadline. This is to let me get everything prepared from the coaching end for the races.
- Races will be posted on the Lowe Running Website, our current schedule is up and is almost complete. I am still waiting on a couple of races to post.
- The meet dates, as we get them, will also be listed on the GroupMe app, however, this is just for your information. You MUST register via the Lowe Running Weebly page. We are seeing how the GroupMe app works and I felt like it might be helpful to have the information on a calendar.
- If you want your child registered for a race, you MUST complete the registration on the Lowe Running Weebly page. If you do not complete this registration, your runner will NOT be registered for the meet.
- Runner Expectations (behavior, team support, supervision)
- Runners need to come ready to run or do their field event
- Runners need to come ready to listen, this is not a play time
- Runners are encouraged to cheer on their teammates, just like they want to be cheered on. Encouraging others as they compete is SO VERY important.
- We also encourage cheering on the other teams. Again, some of their runners may not have the level of support that our Lowe athletes get and it is always great to hear encouragement at events.
- Runners need to pay attention to what time they are to stretch and be at the tent 5 minutes prior to that. We do our best to make sure all runners are accounted for before we go stretch, however, we cannot be searching for runners.
- Track and Field meet are VERY busy. PLEASE keep track of your runner and be aware of the time. Coaches will not be able to run around looking for missing runners. If your runner is competing in field events, there is a set amount of time given for them to complete each event. They MUST compete during this allotted time, there is no exception. We will do our best to get everyone to their field events, but, again, will not be able to chase athletes down.
- Parent Expectations (behavior, team support, supervision)
- Please come ready to cheer, not only your runner but all runners. We know you are most excited about your runner running, but other runners may not have the cheering section your child has. We want all children to feel encouraged and loved.
- PLEASE do not use foul language in the Lowe tent or when standing around the race route.
- Let the Coaches take your runner to their event. Race officials are cracking down this year and will disqualify athletes or even the team from a race. We understand you want to make for sure your child is where they are supposed to be and we appreciate that, but please let the Coaches take care of this once you have your runner at the tent.
- You will NOT be allowed on the field, so please do not try to follow your runner. We’ve got this and need your trust
- If you have a question about an event or meet result, please bring it to the attention of the coaches and let us handle it. Many of us have built relationships with the meet officials through the years and we know what channels to go through.
- Times – When to Arrive
- ALL runners MUST arrive at a minimum of one (1) hour prior to your runner’s scheduled event.
- Meets run on a rolling start and can run ahead of schedule and we cannot wait for your runner to get there. A rolling start means that an event may start earlier than the posted time if the event before it ends early. The only guaranteed time at a track and field meet is the first event.
- PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be mindful of your time. At most of the meets, parking is an issue, please account for this. We must also alot time for getting your runners their race bibs (numbers) and proper warm-up before their events.
- Track and Field meets can be VERY long. Please be aware of this and plan accordingly. Have snacks and hydration for your athlete. I will also bring a water jug to races to help with hydration.
- Meet Events
- Our distance meets will run at 1 mile length over a Cross Country course. We will hold these at Seneca Park. The meeting area will be between the tennis courts and the softball field.
- Each track and field meet will have their own set of events. We will do our best to register your runner for the distances and field events they want/we feel they are ready for. If your runner wants to do a specific event, they need to let one of the coaches know ASAP.
- RELAYS
- If you registered your child to run at a specific meet, they may be included in a relay. If you do not show to the meet you registered your child for, you have now taken 3 other runners out of the relay race. This was a problem last year. Please be mindful of this when registering your child for a race.
- Awards
- Each race has their own awards and decides who gets them (top 20, top 10, top 3 etc) Some races will have no specific award.
- Even though it is fun to get an award, the goal for each runner should be for them to improve on their own personal times. Please stress to your runner that they are racing against their own times.
